The proposed program is largely motivated by the establishment of the new College of Petroleum Engineering and Geosciences which aspires to be in the top tier of petroleum-related teaching and research academic groupings in the world. Applied Geophysics is one of the three main legs on which the College rests and therefore a pre-eminent doctoral program in this field is critically important for the success of the College. The proposed PhD program will be based on a balanced approach that combines excellence in education with basic and applied research relevant to the discovery and recovery of hydrocarbon resources with minimum environmental impact. The program will produce leaders whose exceptional expertise will impact global initiatives in energy. Furthermore, the choice to focus the proposed PhD program on petroleum addresses a vital resource of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
